Qld hort urged to support Fiji’s recovery after Cyclone Winston

9 March 2016

The peak horticulture organisation has urged Queensland horticulture growers to support Fiji as the country struggles to recover.

“Horticulture growers in Queensland are well aware of the horror of enduring severe cyclones and the months of clean up afterwards,” said Growcom Commercial Services Manager, Donna Mogg. “Fijians are a major part of horticulture’s workforce under the Seasonal Worker Programme and we grieve with those who have lost family and friends. More than 40 people were killed on the islands, a horrific number. Whole villages have disappeared including 2000 homes.”

Mogg praised the Australian Government for providing a $15 million package of assistance in response to the devastation. “Growcom urges Queensland horticultural growers to do what they can to provide support to Fiji in these dark days. Our staff is supporting the Red Cross Fiji Relief Appeal by hosting an International Day lunch event this month to raise donations.

“Those people wishing to support the appeal can call 1800 811 700 or contact the Red Cross.”
