Contaminated fodder beet seed lines named

11 March 2016

All velvetleaf finds to date have been in fodder beet paddocks sown with one of two varieties: Kyros or Bangor. These varieties have been sold in both the North and South Islands.

The Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) suggests that all growers of Kyros or Bangor fodder beet are advised to check their crops for velvetleaf.

If plants are found, do not remove them – if possible, photograph them, mark their location and then contact MPI Biosecurity on 0800 80 99 66.

Those who have any unused Kyros or Bangor fodder beet seed on their farms are asked to contact the company they purchased it from to arrange for it to be returned.

FAR says that it is still possible that this weed could be present in other fodder beet varieties, and that growers should keep an eye out on all crops.
