This tough competition helps grow the future of the NZ Wine Industry, as high calibre young viticulturists compete to win the prestigious title of Bayer Young Viticulturist of the Year 2016.
By entering the competition, contestants find they significantly increase their skills, knowledge and confidence as well as forming important relationships with other contestants and key industry sponsors which helps further their career. Employers also enjoy the extra exposure of being associated with the competition.
The winners of the regional competitions go through to the National Final, which is held in conjunction with Bragato in August.
The competition dates are as follows:
Auckland (Northern): 10 June, Mudbrick, Waiheke
Marlborough: 23 June, Marlborough Research Centre
Hawke’s Bay: 7 July, Te Awa, Gimblett Gravels
Central Otago: 22 July, Cromwell Polytechnic
Wairarapa: 28 July, Te Kairanga, Martinborough
National Final: 23-25 August, Marlborough
Contestants not based in these regions are still eligible to enter.
The competition consists of a mix of theoretical and practical questions such as trellising, pruning, pests & diseases, machinery and nutrition as well as the contestants having to give a dinner speech in front of key industry leaders. A highlight of the competition is the Biostart Hortisports when the contestants go head to head in this fun yet challenging race. Everyone is welcome to come along and support throughout the competition.
There are cash prizes for regional winners and the National winner takes home an amazing prize package, which includes a Hyundai Santa Fe Elite for one year, $5000 travel grant, and $2000 cash.
The National winner has come from Hawke’s Bay the last two years.
