Richard Byllaardt from Sevenfields said that by working together with Mildura Fruit Nurseries, the orchard could get a faster and a more consistent supply of trees.

“We peel seed coatings using special techniques, they take around 3-5 days to germinate instead of 3-5 weeks when unpeeled, this method also gives a straight root and shoot," explained Danny Thornton, Director at MFN.

Much of the work done at the nursery is said to be experimental and very innovative.

The business currently has the capacity to grow 90,000 plants per season. Eighteen months is the optimal growing time before the tree goes to the grower, this does depend on the root, variety and grower.
