The announcement of a second food show had local restaurant owners on the island buzzing. The event promotes the use of local Niue food ingredients and cuisine.
This year Niuean artist, John Pule, will add a splash of art with a new exhibition in Liku Village that will run from 4-10 September.
Pacific Islands Trade & Invest’s then Trade Development Manager, Teremoana Mato, participated in the inaugural Kai Niue event in 2014, along with top chefs Alex Kaihea, Michael Meredith and Robert Oliver PT&I says it was delighted to see the event established on the tourism calendar with new chefs and a great programme.
Once again, Niue Tourism has secured a sponsors including winemakers Yealands, Villa Maria New Zealand and Invivo, the New Zealand High Commission and Scenic Matavai Resort Niue.
This year’s trio of chefs includes Martin Bosley, Yael Shochat and Rob Baxter starring as guest chefs for 150 people at the New Zealand Commissioners Residence Lunch on Day Two of Kai Niue.
The programme definitely offers something for everyone. One of the key attractions for foodies and local restauranteurs will be the Master Class cooking classes run at the Scenic Matavai by Lou and Ant Bentley from the Akaroa Cooking School in association with Invivo Wines on Day One. Chef Yael Schochat of Ima’s Cuisine in association with Yealands Wines on Day Two.
With limited bookings of up to fifty participants, the cooking shows will inevitably quickly sell out with many locals keen to update their skills on the latest trends in the cooking world.
Foodies will also be spoiled for choice with the local Niue restaurants showing off their culinary prowess during the Niuean Participating Restaurants dinner night. Meanwhile, Hakupu Atua Village will also host a traditional feast for fifty people.
Youngsters who dream of becoming the next Jamie Oliver or Nigella will not want to miss their chance to enter the popular Niue Junior Chef Competition hosted up at the Niue High School on the final day. It’s their chance to sharpen their knives, show off their culinary talent and start their cooking journey. Last but by no means least – wine buffs have a wine blending event at the Matavai Resort, providing the perfect start to the $100 per head Gala Dinner on the final night of the festival.
