Grower News

Van Lier Nurseries is one of the largest producers of fresh cut roses in New Zealand and has been doing so since 1967. That’s almost fifty years of NZ-grown flower production. This means that at some stage, a Van Lier Nurseries-grown flower will have been purchased and enjoyed through one of many NZ retailers.

Van Lier's also grow Alstroemeria. This long standing family run business that are well known for their cut flower propagation and cultivation produce a wide range of varieties from their nurseries in Massey and Riverhead, Auckland.

Its Alstromeria lines carry the same value and promise that all Van Lier products do: ‘only the best quality makes it to market’. Through a stringent quality control process, four main checks are done to ensure that only the best flowers leave their nurseries and make it out to the NZ consumer via flower retailers.

Van Lier Nurseries quality checks include:

  • Straightness and strength of the stems;
  • No damage to the head/bloom;
  • The absence of pests and diseases;
  • Head/bloom tightness (for longevity once sold to the NZ consumer).

The company specialises in a new variety of Alstroemeria to the NZ market, called Florinca. This is a new type of ‘spray Alstroemeria’ that has multiple bracts and blooms per stem, giving it a ‘spray effect’ from each stem. This new variety is considered to be  perfect in all flower settings, from bouquets to grand wedding arrangements adding height, colour and impact. Florinca from Van Lier Nurseries is available currently in two colours: Charmelia (Light Pink) and Paradiso (White).

Along with Florinca, they also grow standard Alstromeria in: Light Pink, Hot Pink, Orange, Cream, Red, White, mauve, green, purple and yellow.
