How many Cut Flower Growers are there in New Zealand?
One of the challenges represented in accurate statistics on the Cut Flower Industry is that it is by nature a 'Sunset Industry'. Attracting those in pre retirement or moving out of corporate lives, the average age of the New Zealand Flower Grower (as is the case with many other horticulturists) is 60 years old. For this reason it is an industry characterised by 'churn' that is, growers entering (buying properties) or leaving (retiring from) active growing.
To ensure our database of growers is up-to-date it is necessary from time to time to canvas known or suspected growers. The NZFGA committee will be undertaking a brief telephone survey of growers over the coming months to check on status, and to gauge the interest in participating in the industry at large. The NZFGA or New Zealand Flower Growers Association comprises growers and suppliers across the spectrum of flower growing endeavours. Their efforts on behalf of the industry are almost entirely voluntary and as such it is hoped that growers will be welcoming and helpful when the representative calls
Should growers not receive a phone call and feel their status has changed (ie selling retiring or other change of contact details) please contact the Association in the first instance on [email protected]
In addition if readers do know of growers who are not getting the regular flower grower newsletters they should also contact the association.
