The Global Green Race, are we keeping up?
Flower growers can use consumers’ interest in ‘green growth’ issues to their commercial advantage, says the Association.
A new report says New Zealand is lagging behind the rest of the world in the global green race, and industry needs to encourage green economic growth to ensure a wealthier future.
Pure Advantage, a not-for-profit organisation has released the report which explains how green growth is a path to improved economic performance, better paying jobs, the protection of our environment and improved
health outcomes for New Zealand.
NZFGA committee member Ian Kempthorne agrees.
“New Zealand is probably a bit behind the times because we are relatively small and green growth needs a commitment to research and technology,” he says.
Mr Kempthorne says New Zealand flower growers need to be more mindful of the green issue.
“More green technology is coming into our industry with the use of bio sprays and fertilisers etc. We must go into this with an open mind." He says flower growers must be more aware of their packaging, too.
“Recently we got some really good gerbera cups from overseas. We used to have soft ones but these were harder and protected the flowers better."
“But there was a consumer backlash as these cups weren’t deemed recyclable. Consumers are more and more aware of these things so we must be, too.”
