Waste Oil Usage Survey

Heating for all growers involved in Glasshouse production is a big issue. With costs of fuels rising, growers need to look at options that provide not only financial sustainability, but which are also environmentally acceptable.

The practice of utilising Waste Oil to generate heating has been increasingly popular as this recycling system has a positive impact in terms of Carbon Credits, and can save growers hundreds per month in some cases.

However the area is undergoing some potential legislative change in that Waste Oil has been brought under HSNO by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Waste Oil will be subject to a ‘Code of Practice’. The
nature and obligations of this Code will be open to public submissions and the EPA are obliged to engage in public consultation over the next months, possibly around October.

In order to fully represent growers Horticulture NZ is seeking more information from its growers on their fuel usage in terms of Waste Oil and other heating forms, to better represent growers on the desired nature of the final Code of Practice. Flower Growers wishing to participate by completion of the survey information are encouraged to do so, by emailing [email protected] for a copy of the survey, completing this and sending to [email protected] no later than 3rd August 2012.
