Cut Flower Importation to New Zealand - YTD trends
Latest importation data is showing a decrease YTD to May 2015 in the number of cut flower stems imported. In 2013 we saw a total of 1.2 Million stems imported up to May (all flower types) compared with 2 million in 2014, and so far this year 1.8 million stems.
While it is early days, (a total of 5 Million stems were imported in 2014 to New Zealand for the calendar year) it does show a trend to a reduction of around 11% in cut flower imports
Counter to this trend is the recent importation of increasing numbers of Alstroemeria and Orchids both showing a spike over 2014 numbers. However numbers are small compared to roses which account for around 80% of all cut flowers imported into New Zealand annually, typically for events such as Valentines Day, Christmas and Mothers Day. Colombian roses have increased in 2015 to date whereas Indian Roses have dropped back to 2013 levels.
