Flower Industry Awaits SFF Decision
A comprehensive project proposal has been put forward by the NZFGA led by executive member and long time grower Chris Smellie. The project is entitled "Development of a Floricultural Portal Containing Information & Data of Benefit to the Industry". The project encompasses the gathering and on-line representation of information critical to the success and wellbeing of the NZ Cut Flower Industry. The threats are many and well documented in recent reportage on importation of cut flowers as well as biosecurity risks, and a strong dollar impeding grower profitability and export success. According to Chris the total cost of the project will be in the region of $140,000 (partially SFF Funding and partially in-kind contributions from NZFGA) to assist the industry to work smarter and ensure a future for NZ's flower growers with communication and up-to-date data seen as critical to the industry's future.
