If you ever wonder how other countries are in terms of their celebrations around cut flowers and gift giving, there are wide differences in practices and the preferred flower types which are favoured for these occasions. Whilst the Dutch consume two-thirds of their cut flowers for 'own use' to brighten up the home, in Russia over three-quarters of all cut flowers sold are given as a gift.
Of the events for gift giving, Women's Day on 8th March eclipses even Mothers Day in terms of cut flower gifts, accounting for 9% of annual cut flower sales
Of all flowers purchased, the tulip is the favourite (37%), followed by roses (33%) and chrysanthemums (14%). Red is the most important colour, but compared to other gift occasions people may also choose yellow or purple flowers for their Women's Day bouquet, and colours are often mono-schematic, ie all one colour boquets rather than mixed
