The event gave the finalists time to network with each other, hear presentations from some of the main suppliers in the industry, and an introduction to leadership training.

Bayer Crop Science, Turners and Growers, Fruitfed Supplies, Primary ITO and ANZ presented to the group over the two days.

The group included 2013 finalists: Kelly Jean Kerr (Nursery and Garden), Eliza Whalley( Parks and Garden), Jessica Mills(Floristry), Ben James (Fruit Sector of Horticulture NZ) and Matt Fox (NZ Winegrowers), along with Education Trust members Elenka Nikoloff and George Tregidga.

Max Spence, National Manager Fruitfed Supplies, called the group “rockstars”. He appreciated the opportunity to spend time with the finalists whom he said have the opportunity to contribute to and succeed in the horticultural industry. “I’d like to think there’s an opportunity for some of these people to join us in our business.”

Viticulturist, Matt Fox, said that being able to see how large companies from other industries (Turners &Growers, Fruitfed Supplies, Bayer Crop Science) operate gave him a new and useful perspective. He valued the one day ANZ leadership course where he learned more about communication and leadership styles as well as understanding relationships between people. “I gained useful information and tools to improve the way I communicate with the people I work with.”

Holger Detje, Country Manager, Bayer Crop Science found the forum provided a useful opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas, talk about current and future opportunities and issues which were thought provoking and inspirational for all participants. “This year we were able to interact with the finalists in a smaller group which facilitated a better discussion and conversations,” he said.

Programme Manager Elenka Nikoloff said she was pleased these connections will help the young horticulturists as they transition into the next phase of their professional careers in the industry.
